We started enabling devices on the internet before the term “IoT” was coined.
In the early 2000’s, as part of a startup called iMonitor, we developed the security industry’s first cloud-enabled physical access control product. This innovative solution advanced the state-of-the-art of access control systems by eliminating complex software installations and enabling human control and monitoring from any location instead of the previous on-premise-only guard stations.
This solution moved the typical on-premise server to the cloud and also required that the devices that control card key access to doors be enabled to communicate over the internet to the cloud-based servers. Previously the door control devices were connected only to the on-premise server via serial communications. Today, these internet-enabled devices would be considered to be IoT devices and internet-based security is the rule and not the exception.
